Regional Centre of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences (EANSI)

About Us

The East African Community decided in 2014 to establish Centers of Excellence in Biomedical Sciences. It recommended that Burundi focus on Nutrition. On February 28, 2018, Presidential Decree No. 100/018 established a Sub-Regional Center of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences known as the "East African Nutritional Science Institute" (EANSI).

In unwavering support to the Republic of Burundi, the AfDB agreed to finance a support project for the Regional Center of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences EANSI with grant No. 5900155016060. This Center of Excellence is hosted at the University of Burundi, and the faculties of medicine and agronomy are the main actors in the management and implementation of this multisectoral center of excellence, given that nutrition and food security are cross-cutting.

The Support Project for the Sub-Regional Center of Excellence in Nutritional Sciences has three components:

(I) Institutional and pedagogical support,
(II) Infrastructure development support,
(III) Project management.
Expected results are:

  • Master's level training in nutritional sciences for 150 students,
  • Doctoral level training for 10 students,
  • Continuing education in the nutrition, health and agriculture sectors, with at least 180 students,
  • Students will be trained in the following areas:
  • clinical nutrition,
  • nutrition and public health,
  • food technology,
  • food quality,
  • food security and climate change.
Training will be provided in English and French by professors who speak both languages. Students unable to speak English at the time of registration may take English or French classes at the University of Burundi language laboratory, which will be supported by the project.
